The washing machine may be our daily companion, but it’s not always “gentle” with all clothes. Especially delicate fabrics such as silk, wool or lace, which need special care. Today, I’m going to talk to you about “How to Hand Wash Delicate Clothes”, so that you can not only protect your clothes, but also find a little fun in the laundry process!
1. Determine if your clothes are suitable for hand washing
First, pick up your “delicate” clothes and take a close look at the label. Most delicate fabrics are labeled as hand washable. If it doesn’t, then don’t throw it in the washing machine just yet. Hand washing is usually the safest option.
2. Prepare a laundry sink
You don’t need a big tub of water or any complicated tools, a laundry sink will suffice. Find a clean sink or a larger basin and set the water to a lukewarm temperature (around 40°C). Water that is too hot may damage the fabric, and too cold does not remove stains easily.
3. Choose the right detergent
Ordinary laundry detergents may be too strong, choosing detergents designed for delicate clothes will be gentler. There are many hand-wash friendly detergents on the market, or you can also choose baby detergent, which is usually formulated to be gentle and won’t weigh down your clothes.
4. Rub gently
This step is very critical, remember, “gentle” is the core of hand washing delicates. Gently submerge your clothes in water and rub them a little. Never scrub or rub as this can damage the fibers of the garment. You can help remove stains by gently rubbing with your fingers. 5.
5. Don’t let your clothes soak for a long time
Fine fabrics usually don’t like to be soaked for a long time. After a short wash (about 5-10 minutes), you can start rinsing. You don’t need to run the water too many times, just make sure the suds are washed out.
6. Rinse well
To make sure you wash away any residual detergent, you can rinse the water several times until it becomes clear. You can also consider adding a little bit of white vinegar to help remove detergent residue while keeping your clothes soft.
7. Careful wringing
Many people mistakenly believe that wringing their clothes removes excess water, but excessive twisting is actually very unkind to delicate fabrics. The best method is to place the garment on a towel and use a gentle pressing motion to draw out the excess moisture.
8. Lay flat to dry
It’s best not to hang clothes on hangers after hand washing because gravity can stretch clothes, especially wool or silk clothes. Lay your clothes flat to dry on a clean towel to ensure they return to their natural shape. If the clothes are particularly delicate, you can choose to use a specialized clothes drying rack.
9. Give your clothes proper care
In addition to hand washing, it’s good to give your clothes some extra care once in a while. For example, use a fabric care spray on a regular basis to maintain the luster and elasticity of the fabric. Silk clothing can also be regularly used silk special care oil, to maintain its smooth feeling.
