1. First treatment is the key
If you accidentally get Sharpie on your clothes, the first thing to do is to try to treat it as early as possible. the fresher the ink when it is first stained, the easier it is to remove. So, when you find Sharpie marks on your clothes, do it immediately to avoid the ink penetrating into the fabric and forming a fixed stain.
2. Use Alcohol
Alcohol is one of the most commonly used methods to remove Sharpie marks, as it is highly volatile and can effectively dissolve the pigment in Sharpie ink, making the marks easier to remove. It is very simple to do:
Find a clean cloth or cotton ball and dip it in a small amount of alcohol (ordinary medical alcohol or a cleaner with a higher concentration of alcohol will do). Gently wipe the Sharpie print on your clothes, working from the outer edge inwards to avoid spreading the ink to other areas. After a few wipes, see if the imprint lightens. If there is still residue, you can continue wiping. When you’re done, follow the regular procedure of putting the garment in the washing machine.
3. Remove with hairspray
Some of you may not have thought that everyday hairspray can also help you remove Sharpie marks. Why? Because hairspray contains a certain amount of alcohol that can help dissolve the ink.
The procedure is also very simple: Spray hairspray directly onto the Sharpie marks, being careful not to spray too much. Gently wipe with a clean cloth to see if the ink starts to fade. If the ink is no longer as visible, you can put the garment in the washing machine and wash it normally.
4. White vinegar and detergent combination
If you feel that the effect of alcohol and hairspray is not obvious, you can try a combination of white vinegar and detergent, because the acidity of white vinegar can help break down the components of the ink, while detergent can play a role in cleaning, the combination of the two is very effective. This method is very simple and works great. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and dishwashing liquid together and stir well. Dip a cloth in the mixture and gently wipe the Sharpie marks. After wiping, let the liquid sit on the stain for a few minutes. Then rinse with water and put it in the washing machine for a normal wash.
Tips:
1. Do a little test before wiping: Whether you’re using alcohol, hairspray or another cleaning product, the most important step is to test it. Different fabrics react differently to cleaners, so before you start working on Sharpie stains, do a small test on the inside of the garment or in an inconspicuous area. If there is no discolouration or damage, only then can you work on the stain.
2. Washing is also key: It is best to choose cold water for washing. This is because hot water has the potential to speed up the fixation of the ink, making the stain more difficult to remove. Washing in cold water helps to preserve the colour and fabric of the garment.
