Have you ever accidentally gotten yellow mustard on your clothes while eating a hot dog, sandwich or burger? Yellow mustard stains can be a real headache, especially when it looks deeply imprinted on your favorite clothes. But, don’t rush! Today I’m going to share some simple yet effective tips on how to remove yellow mustard stains quickly and save your clothes!
1. treat it quickly, the less time the better!
The most important step when dealing with yellow mustard is to treat it as soon as possible. When the stain is still fresh, gently pat it with a paper towel or cloth to absorb the excess yellow mustard on the surface, do not rub it, this will prevent the stain from spreading deeper. Remember to avoid rubbing hard or you may rub the yellow mustard into the fibers of the garment.
2. Rinse with cold water
Yellow mustard does not like cold water! To treat the stain, first turn the garment onto its back and rinse the stained part directly with cold water. Cold water helps prevent the yellow mustard dye from penetrating the fibers. While rinsing with cold water, don’t use hot water because hot water will make the stain stronger.
3. Use laundry soap or detergent
If water doesn’t rinse out all the yellow mustard stains, you can use a small amount of laundry soap or detergent. Apply some laundry soap to the stain and rub it gently, especially around the edges of the yellow mustard. Then rinse it off with cold water. This is a simple and effective way to remove yellow mustard, so you may want to give it a try.
4. The magic combination of white vinegar and baking soda
Did you know that the combination of white vinegar and baking soda can be a great stain remover? White vinegar and baking soda are definitely your savior when regular detergents don’t work well. First, sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on a yellow mustard stain and then pour some white vinegar on it. You’ll see them start to foam and react, wait a few minutes and then rinse it off with water.
5. Use oxidizing bleach (for white clothing)
Oxidizing bleach is a great option if you’re dealing with a yellow mustard stain on white clothing. Soak the stained portion in the oxidizing bleach solution and follow the product instruction time. It is important to note that bleach is only suitable for white or very light-colored clothing; dark-colored clothing is best avoided with this method.
6. Wipe with alcohol
If you don’t have oxidizing bleach or white vinegar, a little alcohol can come in handy. Take a clean cloth or cotton ball, moisten it with some alcohol and gently wipe the yellow mustard stain. The alcohol will help dissolve the grease content in the yellow mustard. Rinse with cold water after treatment, and the stain should be reduced a lot.
7. Washing machine
If the yellow mustard stain is still stubborn after the above treatment, then the next step is very simple. Put the clothes in the washing machine and wash them on the regular washing program. You can use laundry detergent or powder, especially if the stain has been lightened, and the machine wash will further remove any remaining traces.
8. Check to ensure complete removal
Always check that the stain is completely removed before putting the clothes in the dryer. Hot air can make stains that can’t be removed already more difficult to deal with. If you find that there is still residue, it’s best to re-treat it again.
9. Prevention is the key
Yellow mustard stains can actually be avoided! If you know you’re prone to getting food on your clothes, consider wearing some dark-colored clothes or try to be careful when eating. It’s also a good idea to keep some wipes for yourself to clean up stains on your hands whenever you can to minimize the chances of contaminating your clothes.
